1. DREAMS AND ASPIRATIONS
Usually, you would imagine this question being asked in the early stages of our life such as young adults or as school age children. Although, those are great stages to envision yourself doing what you love when you reach adulthood, but let's be honest, how many of us began to live out those dreams after high school? Not so many, life has its way of placing barriers or obstacles in our path that make it a little harder to reach those goals. Not saying we will never reach them, but that it may take us more time to get there, so you could ask someone these questions on a date, a casual setting, or it could be a friend:
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? (The most common question, right? But it's an important one)
What are some things you hope to achieve or experience one day?
What does your ideal life look like?
2. PHASES OF LIFE
When we think about our phases of life childhood, adulthood, and old age come to mind, but it could also include a new career change, becoming a first-time home buyer, etc. You could ask these following questions:
What is different in your life compared to 5 years ago?
What were things you liked before, that you don't have much interest in today?
Do you plan to have children one day?
What does parenthood look like to you?
Do you see marriage in your future?
Are you currently working your dream career?
3. LIFE AFTER DEATH
This topic is one we all choose to stir away from, because we can't bring ourselves to think about not being on earth with our friends and family anymore. However, there are some who find this topic interesting if you are big on religion, rituals, science etc.
Do you believe in reincarnation or heaven?
If you were to die today, what would be one thing you regret not doing?
What kind of legacy would you want to leave behind?
4. HOBBIES AND PASSIONS
This talk topic is amazing because you could discuss things you enjoy doing or passionate about, which may also be the very things they enjoy as well, it's great for discovering what you guys have in common.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Do you watch anime?
Do you know how to play a musical instrument?
Do you go to concerts, or have you ever been to a concert before?
What are you passionate about?
5. AUTHENTICITY
This topic is a major one for me, because I love an authentic person. Being authentic is nonreplicable. If you are capable of being true to yourself, then you are more than capable of being true to your friendships, relationships, and family. We live in a society where being yourself is looked down upon if you come from a different background, religion, ethnicity, etc. Do not put yourself on hold to accommodate others. Here a few questions to ask:
What do you like to do for fun?
What are your worst fears?
How do you respond to financial hardships?
How do you respond to disappointments?
What kind of clothing style do you have?
What are your family values?
6. CREATIVITY
Creativity is where we can freely express ourselves whether it's through art, music, blogging, dancing, clothing, DIY, etc. We all have some form of creative abilities, and this topic is a great way to see if you guys share some similarities or maybe even give each other new ideas to try. Here are some questions you could ask:
What kind of music do you like?
How do you express yourself when you have no one to talk to?
What are your interests?
Are you interested in entertainment events?
7. HABITS
Learning about each other's habits is a great way to determine if it's something you not willing to tolerate or that you could possibly include in your own share of habits. Habits could include meditation, yoga, going for a jog every morning, drinking coffee daily, or it could even be smoking, drinking, and never being on time for events/gatherings. Habits are built off learning and repetition whether it's a bad habit or good habit, this is a great topic to discuss as well. Here are some questions you could ask:
Do you have a daily routine?
What are some things you do, that you don't like doing?
What are some things you think you should let go of?
What are some things you never thought about doing 5 years ago? That you are doing today?
8. BACKGROUND
Learning where someone is from is a great way to understand their way of speaking, sense of humor, traditions, and the foods they like. As an example, in the south we are friendly, family oriented, traditional, loaded with sense of humor, and we love our season-filled meals, whereas northerners are described to be more reserved, fast paced, manner restricted, and bland. The difference between the two could cause a wedge on relationships or it could be a learning experience on both parties. Here are some questions you could ask:
Where were you born?
Where is your family from?
What do you like about your city?
What kind of foods do you have in your city?
What are some interesting events you've attended there?
9. VACATIONS
Sharing vacation experiences are a great way to make plans to travel together or you may gain an interest to go there on your next vacation adventure. Here are some questions you could ask:
Where is the greatest place you've traveled to?
Have you ever traveled out of the country before?
Would you ever travel there again?
What was the experience like?
How were the residents? Were they welcoming?
These are a few ideas to help spark amazing conversations. If you are someone that struggle with communicating with other people or find it hard to keep the conversation interesting. I hope these topics and questions help you get on a path of great communication.
I used to be the awkward one on a date or social setting looking around, avoiding eye contact, or smiling the entire time because I couldn't think of much to say. I still find myself like that sometimes, because for so long I was quiet and reserved-- feeling like I was going to be labeled as noisy ha-ha, but it is necessary to ask and get to know who a person is at the core. It forms a better understanding and relationship between both of you.
I hope this article was helpful! Meet me in the comment section to share your experiences, we would love to hear it! :)
